Harvard Medical School, Training the Eye: Improving the Art of Physical Diagnosis

Training the Eye is an interactive, preclinical course that addresses the visual challenges of clinical diagnosis. Students will develop visual analysis skills and examine the process of diagnosis broadly. The course capitalizes on the power of the visual arts to promote the communication and analysis skills necessary to addressing ambiguity in the physical exam. Through discussions, drawing and writing exercises, lectures and interactions with patients, and an intensive drawing workshop (mandatory), students will learn to apply these skills by examining both art and patients with a broad range of disorders. This course is led by Dabney Hailey and Harvard Medical School faculty.

Dabney Hailey is Founder and Principal of Hailey Group, a consultancy teaching leadership, communication, and innovation skills within organizations internationally, from small nonprofits to Fortune 500s. She is a pioneer in the application of arts learning—in particular the educational methodology, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS)—within the business world. She is co-founder of Hailey Group's VTS@Work Program, which trains professionals from healthcare, business, and higher education. Dabney serves as co-director of the Harvard Medical School course, Training the Eye: Improving the Art of Physical Diagnosis. She holds a B.A. from Hendrix College and an M.A. from Northwestern University.
